Although veterinary care, lots of love and healthy lifestyle is the absolute best way to keep your pet feeling good, all dogs will at least experience some form of injury or disease in your life. Do you know that there are many OTC drugs that can be safe and effective for dogs knowing when used properly?
Benadryl or other antihistamine brand can be incredibly useful for treating allergies, insect stings or other causes of itchy skin. Buffered aspirin is an excellent anti-inflammatory and analgesic. Also, dramamin can be used for dogs with dizziness and to treat imodium diarrhea. However, doses for dogs are quite different than for humans.
Use the information in these slides to determine if your antidepressants are safe for dogs (and cats) and how much to be given. Always check with your veterinarian to ensure the health of your pet and history before taking any medication. Also, make sure that you only use the listed drugs, no other ingredients. Many antihistamines, for example, additional decongestants that can be fatal to your dog. Read the labels carefully and in case of doubt do not use them.
Note that collies and other shepherd dogs may have a genetic mutation that caused some OTC drugs in this list, even those that are considered safe for the other breeds are very dangerous. Always use your veterinarian before administering human drugs.
